Sedation Dentistry

What Is Sedation Dentistry?
What to expect from a Sedation Dentist in Smile Care Family Dental, Chester Springs PA

We understand that some patients are apprehensive about visiting the dentist and we accommodate those individuals with special needs. Our goal is to provide you with the highest standard of care in a pleasant and comfortable environment right here in Chester Springs PA. Advances in medication have allowed us to offer oral sedatives that safely produce a deep state of relaxation and make it possible for you to have a dental procedure without feeling any discomfort. You’ll wake up feeling surprisingly good and refreshed; with little to no memory of the procedure performed.

We can also provide IV (Intravenous) sedation. During IV sedation, the sedative is administered into the body through a vein in the arm or hand. Similar to oral sedation, IV sedation produces a deep state of relaxation and pain control. IV sedation normally acts quicker than oral sedation. We discuss which type, oral or IV, is best for you before we proceed with treatment.

Is sedation dentistry safe?

We have safely and comfortably treated numerous patients using sedation. Prior to treatment, we will review your medical history and explain the protocols for the sedation process. Throughout your procedure we will constantly monitor your blood pressure, heart rate and oxygen level. As a safety precaution we ask that bring all the medications you currently take on a daily basis, such as asthma inhalers, in the event of an emergency.

What happens prior to treatment?

If you are receiving treatment under conscious sedation, we will give you a small pill to take an hour before your appointment. By the time you get to the office, you will be very drowsy. We will escort you to a room, begin monitoring your vital signs and assess if more medication is needed. We’ll provide you with a warm blanket for your comfort and increased relaxation. Once you are completely relaxed in our comfortable chairs, via an oral sedative or IV sedation, we’ll begin the procedure. The treatment will be over before you know it!

Will I really be asleep during the procedure?

Some patients fall asleep. However, you will be able to respond to verbal instructions from the dentist. We’ll administer just enough sedative to put you in a relaxed state. During the procedure, you’ll be completely unaware of what is happening, as if you were asleep.

Will I feel any pain?

You should experience little to no discomfort during treatment.

What will I remember?

Following treatment you will have minimal to no memory of the procedure.
